COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Big Ten Conference announced its first weekly men’s gymnastics awards of the 2025 on Tuesday with the Buckeyes sweeping the awards. Senior all-arounder Kameron Nelson was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week, junior Parker Thackston was named Big Ten Specialist of the Week and freshman Tyler Burgess was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. This is the second time in his career that Nelson has earned Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors and Thackston’s third time in his career earning Big Ten Specialist of the Week honors.
Nelson made history on Friday in the Buckeyes’ season opener at the West Point Open. Nelson became the first gymnast in the world to compete two triple backs in a floor routine. Nelson won the floor competition at the West Point Open and currently leads the country with a 13.800. Nelson earned a second event win with a 14.100 on vault and ranks fourth in the country on the event. He also competed in the all-around competition, finishing second with a score of 77.100. His second-place finish qualified him to the 2025 Winter Cup and ranks third in the country.
Thackston won the pommel horse competition at the West Point Open with a 14.500 as the team’s anchor, helping the Buckeyes to a team win in a six-team field. This was the highest score at the meet by any gymnast on any event and beat the runner-up by 0.450. Thackston also led off the Buckeyes’ high bar rotation with a 13.000. Thackston’s 14.500 on pommel horse is the highest score in the country so far this season and is 0.400 higher than the second-highest score. His high bar score ranks 13th in the country.

Tyler Burgess made his collegiate debut on Friday, helping the Buckeyes to win the team competition at the West Point Open (six teams total). Burgess tied for the runner-up score on parallel bars with a 13.700 – the highest Buckeye freshman score and finish of the meet. His 13.700 on parallel bars ranks third in the country.
The Buckeyes host No. 9 Greenville for the home opener on Friday at 6 p.m. inside the Covelli Center. Admission and parking for all home meets is free.
