Ohio State Defeats Indiana in Five Sets on Senior Night

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (14-14, 7-11 B1G) beat Indiana (13-15, 6-12 B1G) in five sets (25-19, 23-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-7) on senior day on Sunday in the 2024 home finale.  
 
Ohio State led from start to finish and held off a late Indiana push in the first set to win by a 25-19 margin. The Hoosiers used a late push to even the match with a 25-23 win in the second set. Indiana gained the advantage in the match with a 25-22 third set win. After surrendering the first two points of the fourth set, Ohio State claimed a lead it would not relinquish and won the set by a 25-17 margin. The Buckeyes scored the first three points of the fifth set and cruised to a convincing 15-7 set win.
 
Mia Tuman recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 46 assists and a career-high 20 digs. Emmi Sellman was the first Buckeye to reach 10 kills, doing so for the ninth time this season and totaling 19 kills. Rylee Rader (13) and Emily Londot (20) joined Sellman with double-figure kills. Grace Egan also totaled double figure digs with a career-high 17 digs in the match and Olivia Hasbrook had 14 digs. Londot added 14 digs for her 16th double-double of the season.
   
How it Happened 
Each Ohio State grad student got a kill to begin the match and the Buckeyes used a pair of 3-0 runs to build an early 8-2 lead, prompting an Indiana timeout. OSU strung pairs of points together to increase its lead to 17-9, forcing a second IU timeout. The Buckeyes led by as many as 10 points at 21-11 before the Hoosiers cut their deficit in half at 21-16. IU got as close as three at 21-18 before OSU scored the next three points before Emmi Sellman sealed the 25-19 set win with her third kill of the match.
 
Indiana scored the first two points of the second set before Ohio State built an early 8-4 lead on a pair of 3-0 runs. The Hoosiers used a 5-1 run to tie the set at nine and back-to-back points to take the lead back at 11-10. The Buckeyes responded with a 5-1 run of their own to take a 15-12 lead into the media timeout. OSU led by as many as four points at 17-13, but IU got within one at 20-19. The Buckeyes responded with back-to-back points to force an Indiana timeout, but the Hoosiers scored back-to-back points out of their timeout to get within one again at 22-21. IU tied the set at 22 for the first time since the score was 11-11 and tied up the match with a 25-23 set win.
 
Ohio State opened scoring in the third set and jumped out to an 8-4 lead before Indiana tied the set at eight following a 4-0 run. The Hoosiers took their first lead of the set at 11-10 and build an 18-14 lead with a pair of 3-0 runs. The Buckeyes scored the next three points to get within one and tied the set at 21 on back-to-back kills from Emily Londot. Indiana took the set by a 25-22 margin.
 
In the fourth set, Indiana scored the first two and Ohio State had the next three. Neither team had any major run in the first half of the set and the Buckeyes scored back-to-back points to increase their lead to 13-8, forcing a Hoosiers timeout. OSU bumped its lead to 18-11 to prompt a second IU timeout. Ohio State led by as many as 10 points at 22-12 and closed a 25-17 set win on a kill from Londot.
 
Ohio State scored the first three points of the fifth set. The Buckeyes took an 8-3 lead on kills from Londot and Egan. Following kills from Brandewie and Londot, OSU’s lead grew to 11-5 and prompted an IU timeout. The Hoosiers called a second timeout with the Buckeyes up by a 13-7 margin. Back-to-back kills from Sellman sealed the 15-7 set win and the match.

Match Notes 

  • This is the 11th match of the season that Ohio State has totaled at least 10 blocks. The Buckeyes had 15 blocks today. Rylee Rader (7), Eloise Brandewie (6) and Mia Tuman (5) led the Buckeye block.
  • Tuman earned her ninth double-double of the season with 46 assists and a career-high 20 digs.
  • Emmi Sellman recorded her ninth double-figure kill match of the season with 19 kills tonight.
  • Rader had 10+ kills for the seventh time this season, finishing with 13 kills.
  • Grace Egan totaled a career-high 17 digs, her fifth match of the season with at least 10.
  • Emily Londot’s 16th double-double of the season was good for 20 kills and 14 digs. She’s recorded at least 10 kills in every match this season.
  • Olivia Hasbrook had double-figure digs for the 25th time this season and totaled 14 digs tonight, including the 400th of her career.
  • S1: Ohio State hit .444 in the set, recording 15 kills on 27 swings with only three errors – all Indiana blocks. The Buckeyes had four different players with at least three kills in the set.
  • S4: After surrendering the first two points, Ohio State scored the next three and held the lead for the remainder of the set.
  • S5: The Buckeyes scored the first three points and led from start to finish.
