COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 11/8 Ohio State women’s basketball team (10-0, 1-0 B1G) beat Youngstown State (6-5, 2-0 HL) by an 87-39 margin on Saturday on girl dad and youth day.
Ohio State scored the first 12 points of the game and held a 23-14 lead after 10 minutes, including 16 first quarter points from Cotie McMahon. The Buckeyes put together a 25-0 run over nearly eight minutes in the second quarter, outscoring the Penguins 29-4 in the quarter to build a 52-18 halftime lead. Ohio State led by a 70-30 margin after three quarters and won the game by an 87-39 margin after a 17-9 fourth quarter.
All eight Ohio State players who saw the court scored at least one basket and had at least one rebound. McMahon reached double figures with 4:34 left in the first quarter as she had 16 points in the first quarter and 29 points in the game. Ajae Petty joined McMahon in double figures in the second quarter and finished with 19 points, adding 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Chance Gray scored 12 points.
How it Happened
Ohio State scored the first 12 points of the game in less than four minutes before Youngstown State could get onto the board. The Buckeyes led by as many as 13 points in the first quarter at 16-3 with 4:34 remaining in the frame. The Penguins were able to respond with five consecutive points and the teams alternated scoring down the stretch as the Buckeyes led 23-14 after 10 minutes.
After Youngstown State opened the second quarter with a layup, Ohio State rattled off the next 17 points and extended its lead to 40-16 going into the media timeout just past the midway point of the quarter. The Buckeyes extended their run to 25-0 and their lead to 48-16 with 1:42 remaining in the second quarter. Ohio State led by a 52-18 margin at halftime.
The Buckeyes opened the second half with a trio of layups to push their lead to 58-18 three minutes into the quarter. Both teams locked down defensively and the score was 60-22 midway through the quarter at the media timeout. Ohio State held the 70-30 advantage after 30 minutes of play.
The Buckeyes had the 10-2 advantage in the first four minutes and change of the fourth quarter and led by an 80-32 margin at the media timeout. Scoring was capped at 87-39 on a Petty free throw.

- Taylor Thierry totaled a career-high seven steals, bringing her career total to 180 steals and moving her up to 13th in program history.
- Chance Gray recorded her eighth double figure scoring performance of the season with 12 points.
- Elsa Lemmilä has had at least one block in every game this season.
- Madison Greene became the 29th player in program history to record 140 career steals and now ranks 28th with 141 after three steals today.
