SAN FRANCISCO – The No. 11/9 Ohio State women’s basketball team (12-0, 1-0 B1G) beat Stanford (8-4, 0-1 ACC) by an 84-59 margin on Friday night in the Invisalign Bay Area Women’s Classic held in the Chase Center.
Both teams started slowly but the Buckeyes used a pair of 6-0 runs in the first quarter to build a 16-6 lead after 10 minutes. Ohio State had a 17-13 advantage in the second quarter to take a 33-19 lead into the locker room. The Buckeyes led by a 57-39 margin with 10 minutes to play and 84-59 after a 27-20 fourth quarter.
Cotie McMahon was the first player to reach double figures and finished the game with 16 points. Ajae Petty (14), Chance Gray (14), Madison Green (season-high 15), Taylor Thierry (12) and Ava Watson (11) joined McMahon in double figures as all five starters scored at least 10 points.
How it Happened
Cotie McMahon got to the line after a Buckeye offensive rebound to begin scoring and the Buckeye defense held Stanford scoreless for the first 2:45 of the game. Ohio State led 3-2 midway through the quarter. The Buckeyes made back-to-back layups and put together a second 6-0 run to take a 13-4 lead with 2:18 to play in the quarter. Ohio State led 16-6 after the first quarter.
Madison Greene and Ajae Petty began the second quarter with back-to-back layups to extend Ohio State’s lead to 20-6. Petty converted a pair of jumpers and Chance Gray did the same as the Buckeyes held a 28-12 lead with 4:31 to play in the half. Stanford had the final points of the half as Ohio State went into the locker room with a 33-19 lead.
The teams traded baskets to open the third quarter before Ohio State scored eight unanswered points to increase its lead to 45-27 midway through the quarter. Back-to-back Buckeye baskets leading into the media timeout gave OSU a 51-31 lead. Ava Watson made a pair of three-pointers down the stretch as the Buckeyes led 57-39 with 10 minutes to play.
Stanford opened scoring in the fourth and Ohio State used a 6-0 run to increase its lead to 66-43 with just under eight minutes to play. The Buckeyes led 72-52 at the media timeout as all five starters had reached double figures at this point. Ohio State put together a 7-0 run and won by an 84-59 margin at the final buzzer.
