Five Buckeyes in Double Figures Propel Ohio State to 92-62 Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 10/9 Ohio State women’s basketball team (14-0, 3-0 B1G) beat Northwestern (7-8, 0-4 B1G) by a 92-62 margin in the Buckeyes’ first game of 2025.  
 
Ohio State got off to a quick start in the game and led 27-17 after 10 minutes of play. The Buckeyes extended their lead to 53-34 at halftime following a 26-17 second quarter. OSU used a 24-9 third quarter to take a 77-43 lead into the final quarter. The Buckeyes wrapped up a 92-62 win after 15 points in the fourth quarter.  
 
Cotie McMahon reached double figures in under seven minutes of play and finished with 16 points. Chance Gray (14), Jaloni Cambridge (20), Ava Watson (15) and Elsa Lemmilä (11) joined McMahon in double figures. The Buckeyes forced 29 Wildcat turnovers and finished with 16 steals in the game.
 
How it Happened 
Ohio State started quickly, scoring the game’s first seven points and forcing four turnovers in the first 1:39 to prompt a Northwestern timeout. The Wildcats scored the next six points, but the Buckeyes strung together a pair of 5-0 runs to lead 17-8 with 4:33 remaining in the quarter. OSU held a 27-17 lead after 10 minutes as Madison Greene wrapped up scoring at the free throw line.
 
The Buckeyes scored the first five points of the second quarter to stretch their lead to 32-17 on a three-point play from Gray. Neither team scored more than five points in a row throughout the quarter and OSU led by a 43-25 margin with four minutes to play in the half. Northwestern got to the line down the stretch of the second quarter before Watson hit her third triple of the game to give the Buckeyes a 20-point lead with just under a minute remaining in the half. McMahon sent Ohio State to the locker room with a 53-34 lead.
 
The Wildcats opened the third quarter’s scoring with a free throw, but J. Cambridge answered with the Buckeyes’ first five points of the quarter. Ohio State put together a 7-0 run to increase its lead to 62-37 with 7:29 remaining in the quarter and extended that margin to 67-41 at the media timeout. The Buckeyes ended the quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 77-43 lead into the final quarter.
 
Northwestern scored first in the fourth quarter before a three-point play from Elsa Lemmilä. The Buckeyes made three unanswered baskets and led by an 88-49 margin with six minutes to play. Northwestern capped scoring with a layup as Ohio State won by a 92-62 margin.

  • Ohio State scored 53 points in the first half, marking its first half with 50 or more points against a Big Ten opponent since Feb. 11 against Michigan State.
  • The Buckeyes’ 30-point victory is its first win of 30 or more points against a Big Ten opponent since Feb. 14, 2024 against Nebraska.
  • All 10 OSU players who saw the court scored points and recorded at least one assist.
  • The Buckeyes totaled at least 10 steals for the 11th time this season, finishing the game with 16 steals today. That marks back-to-back Big Ten games with 15 or more steals for Ohio State as OSU had 15 at Rutgers on Dec. 29.
  • This is the first time since facing Utah State on Nov. 29 that the Buckeyes have had three players with at least three steals apiece – Ava Watson (4), Taylor Thierry (3), Kennedy Cambridge (3).
  • Ohio State forced 29 Northwestern turnovers, marking the 12th time this season that the Buckeyes have caused at least 20 turnovers.
  • Cotie McMahon was the first to reach double figures, doing so in the first seven minutes of the game and for the ninth time this season. McMahon finished with 16 points.
  • Chance Gray also reached double figures in the first half after scoring 10 points in the second quarter and ended the game with 14 points. This is her 12th double-figure performance as a Buckeye.
  • Jaloni Cambridge’s seventh double-figure game of her collegiate career was good for 20 total points after she scored 11 in the first half. This is the second time she’s reached the 20-point mark.
  • Watson was 5-of-9 from behind the arc in the game, her fourth game of the season with three or more three-pointers made. She totaled 15 points in her fifth game of the season with double figures.
  • Elsa Lemmilä has recorded at least one block in 13 games this season. She had two blocks today to bring her total to 30 blocks on the season. She reached double figures for the third time with 11 points, shooting 4-of-4 from the floor.
  • Four different Buckeyes recorded at least five rebounds apiece – Ajae Petty (5), Thierry (5), J. Cambridge (6) and McMahon (5).
  • Q1: The Buckeye defense forced 10 turnovers and recorded five steals in the opening 10 minutes of the game.
  • Q2: Ohio State shot 58.8 percent from the floor (10-of-17) during the second quarter.
  • Q3: The Buckeyes outscored the Wildcats 24-9 in the quarter. This is the 13th quarter of the season that Ohio State has allowed less than 10 points.
