Eight Buckeyes to Compete at World Aquatics Swimming Championships



 
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Eight current and former Ohio State swimmers are set to compete at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) in Budapest, Hungary from Dec. 10-15.
 
Alex Axon, Emma Finlin and Tristan Jankovics will all represent Canada. All three also made their Olympic debuts for Team Canada in Paris over the summer. Axon has one medal; a bronze won at the 2023 Pan American Games as part of Canada’s 4×200 free relay team. Axon competed in the 4×200 free relay at the Olympics. Axon last competed in the World Aquatics Championships in the summer of 2022, when they were also held in Budapest. Finlin swam in 10-kilometer open water swim in Paris, finishing 23rd with a time of 2:22:06.5. This is the third World Aquatics Championships for Finlin; she also participated in summer 2023 in Fukuoka, Japan and this past summer in Doha, Qatar. Jankovics competed at the Olympics in the 400 IM. This will be his first career World Aquatics Championships.
 
Teresa Ivan and Martin Perecinsky will compete for Team Slovakia. Ivan has competed in multiple World Aquatics Championships, including earlier this year in Doha, Qatar. Ivan is part of the Slovakian record-holding 4×100 free relay (3:39.23), 4×200 free relay (8:01.71), 4×50 medley relay (1:48.51) and 4×100 medley relay (3:59.50) teams. This will be the first World Aquatics Championships for Perecinsky. He is the long-course Slovakian record-holder in the 200 back with a time of 1:58.24, which he set at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials over the summer.
 
Representing the USA is Charlie Clark. This is the fourth straight season on Team USA for Clark. In the 800 free, he recorded a qualifying time of 7:52.83 at the Speedo Summer Championships in Columbus over the summer. He secured his 1500 spot with a time of 14:57.44 at the World Aquatics Championships earlier this year in Doha, Qatar. Clark has four medals, all earned at the Swimming World Cup. He won gold in the 1500 free last fall in Shanghai and also won gold in the 1500 free in Berlin in 2023. He won a bronze medal in the 1500 free last month in Singapore, and also has a 1500 bronze medal from Indianapolis in 2022.
 
Tomas Navikonis will compete for Lithuania. He made his Olympic debut over the summer in Paris, competing in the 4×200 free relay. He has won two medals during his swimming career. Navikonis and Team Lithuania won gold in the 4×200 free relay at the European Championships in Serbia over the summer. He has a silver medal in the 200 free, won at Universiade in Chengdu, China in 2023. Navikonis also competed in the World Aquatics Championships in Doha earlier this year.
 
Buckeye alum Kristen Romano will swim for Team Puerto Rico. Romano swam in her first career Olympic Games over the summer in Paris, where she represented Puerto Rico in the 200 IM. Romano holds the Puerto Rican records in the 100 back (59.62), 200 back (2:09.61), 100 fly (59.51), 100 IM (1:01.24) and 200 IM (2:09.72). She has competed in multiple World Aquatics Championships, including in Doha, Qatar earlier this year.
