Buckeyes Take Game One in Duluth, 3-1

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State women’s hockey team took game one of the top five series against No. 4 Minnesota Duluth Friday night, winning 3-1 at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn.
 
With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 16-5-3 overall and11-5-3 in WCHA play, jumping ahead of the Bulldogs (15-6-2, 10-5-2 WCHA) in the league standings.
 
Short Story
Ohio State got on the board early in the first period, scoring on its first of five power plays in the game. Jocelyn Amos lit the lamp 1:28 into the 5-on-4 for the Buckeyes to give the team the 1-0 lead. Riley Brengman added Ohio State’s second goal in the opening 10 minutes of play, scoring on a one-timer at 9:31.
 
The team had four power play opportunities in the second period and put 18 shots on goal on the player advantage but was unable to find the back of the net. The score remained tied at 2-1 entering the third period as Ohio State goaltender Amanda Thiele made seven saves in the middle frame.
 
Ohio State killed off two Minnesota Duluth power plays in the third period, allowing just two shots on goal on the advantage, to hold off the Bulldogs.
 
Minnesota Duluth pulled goaltender Eve Gascon, who finished the game with 58 saves, with under two minutes to play in search for the equalizer. Instead, Kiara Zanon iced the game with an empty netter with 1:09 remaining.
 
Game Notes

  • Zanon recorded her second straight multi-point game and eighth of the season. In addition to the empty net goal, the graduate forward added an assist on the Buckeyes’ first goal of the game.
  • Amos’ goal is her fourth power play goal in three games. She has recorded a point in the last four games for the Buckeyes and a point on the power play in the last three games.
  • Riley Brengman’s game-winning goal is just her second goal of the season.
  • Thiele made 19 saves in her 10th win of the season. She is now 10-4-2 on the year.
  • The win is the Buckeyes’ first over Minnesota Duluth this season. The win also ended the Bulldogs’ 10-game unbeaten streak.  
  • Ohio State is now tied with Minnesota for second in the league with 36 points. Minnesota Duluth is fourth with 34 points.
