While no official opening date for Mike’s Corner Store has been announced, the signage and paper in the window suggest the transformation is underway.
TOLEDO, Ohio — A beloved piece of Toledo’s culinary history is turning a new page.
The former Rudy’s Hot Dog building at 944 W. Sylvania Avenue, which closed its doors in 2021, will soon be home to Mike’s Corner Store — a business advertising itself as “authentic Mexican food and market.”
A sign posted on the building revealed the news to passersby, signaling the next chapter for the space once occupied by one of Toledo’s most iconic eateries.

This former Rudy’s location near the intersection was among the oldest in its family of restaurants, which was founded in 1920. The building, with its iconic red awning and retro charm, left memories and nostalgia for locals who grew up grabbing hot dogs, shakes and soup when it closed four years ago. Today, there are five Rudy’s Hot Dog locations to visit.
The building went up for auction in 2023, and, according to the Lucas County Auditor’s website, the last sale of the building was in June 2024 for $100,000.

While no official opening date for Mike’s Corner Store has been announced, the signage and paper in the window suggest the transformation is underway.
