Authorities rescue missing man with dementia found stuck in mud in Putnam Co.

PUTNAM COUNTY, Ohio (WTVG) – A man with dementia was rescued on Monday after authorities say he was stuck in mud in Putnam County.

On April 14 around 8:17 p.m., a sergeant with Ohio State Highway Patrol was approached by someone who said they couldn’t find their family member. OSHP then learned the family member, a 73-year-old man with dementia, had left his home and had not been seen for an extended period of time.

OSHP says to help with the search, it contacted its aviation unit and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office who dispatched Kalida FD, deputies, which included a drone operator, and a trained bloodhound. A second drone operator from Elite Drone Services was also sent.

According to PCSO, a deputy and a firefighter located the man around 9:13 p.m. He was found near the Auglaize River stuck in mud, approximately a third of a mile from his last known location. After nearly 20 minutes, the man was pulled from the mud and was carried to an ambulance for evaluation. Officials say he suffered minor injuries.
