TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The bar known as Whiskey Red Saloon hosted community members for a fundraiser to honor Joaquin Simmons.
The goal of the fundraiser was to raise money to cover some of the medical and funeral expenses Simmons’ family is facing. The 18-year-old was killed when a shoe sale turned into a robbery.
Joaquin’s uncle, Joe Garza, was at the fundraiser and said it means a lot to see the community come together in his nephew’s name.
“This type of kindness is the reason why you know communities come together and it’s just so heartwarming,” Garza said.
The fundraiser included a 50/50 raffle, a TV giveaway, and other raffle prizes. Jeff Jones is the owner of the business and friend of the Simmons family. He said he believes this was the best way he could help their family.
“I want people to have awareness, for the senseless violence going on within our community, it’s got to stop. All of these people in here are being affected by the tragedy that has happened to that young man,” Jones said.
Garza said he is hoping to see Joaquin’s story inspire the younger generation to make good decisions and believes it already has.
“Some of his friends were donating food to the homeless and cherry street mission. We hope that people keep that type of spirit up to give back to those who don’t have as much,” Garza said.
The funeral services for Joaquin Simmons are scheduled for April 15th and April 16th. All friends and family are invited to attend.
