COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State women’s hockey team won a seven-round shootout Saturday night at Wrigley Field against No. 2 Wisconsin in the Frozen Confines: Big Ten Hockey Series.
The game saw three lead changes through 65 minutes of play at the Friendly Confines which ultimately ended as a 3-3 tie with Ohio State taking two conference points in the game for the shootout win.
Short Story
Ohio State graduate goaltender Amanda Thiele capped off a 31-save performance with seven saves in the shootout for the Buckeyes to keep Wisconsin without a tally. Captain Jenna Buglioni scored in the seventh round to give Ohio State the extra conference point.
After being held scoreless in Thursday’s game at Wisconsin, Ohio State scored its first goal of the night just 49 seconds into the game. Jordyn Petrie skated the puck into the Badger zone and took a shot from the slot, finishing past the blocker of Wisconsin goaltender Ava McNaughton to give the Buckeyes the early lead.
Wisconsin responded with two unanswered goals – the first at 5:52 and the second at 10:01 – to take a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.
Both teams traded opportunities in the second, but it wasn’t until the final two minutes of the period that a goal was scored. Makenna Webster tied the game with 1:40 to play into the middle frame, sending the puck past an outstretched McNaughton to light the lamp. After 40 minutes of play, the teams were knotted at two goals each and Ohio State only trailed by one shot on goal.
Each team scored in the third period, with Joy Dunne netting the Buckeyes’ third goal of the game at 2:38 and the Badgers tying the game for the second time at 14:17.
Ohio State put five shots on goal in extra time but was unable to find the game-winner in overtime. Thiele stopped two Wisconsin chances to help send the game to a shootout.
Game Notes
- Saturday’s shootout win is the team’s best performance in an outdoor game. Prior to Saturday, the only other outdoor game the Buckeyes had played was a 2-1 loss to then-ranked No. 1 Minnesota at 2020 Hockey Day Minnesota.

- Thiele’s 31 saves against the Badgers is a season-best performance. It’s also her second shootout win of the season. The Milford, Mich. native owns both of the team’s shootout wins on the year.
