Sonos had a horrible 2024, thanks to a botched app update that culminated in the resignation of its CEO. As it looks to fix the app (and find a new chief exec), it hasn’t abandoned new hardware.
As The Verge reports, Sonos plans to launch an Android-based streaming box in the coming months, which could be priced anywhere from $200 to $400.
Codenamed Pinewood, the streaming device will offer content from Netflix, Max, and Disney+ through a single, unified software experience, including universal search across apps.
Like Roku and Amazon devices, the Sonos box will ship with a physical remote featuring shortcuts to popular streaming apps. Design-wise, it apparently won’t break any ground; The Verge describes it as a “flattened black square [that’s] slightly thicker than a deck of trading cards.”
What sets it apart are the HDMI ports with passthrough functionality. It will allow users to connect external devices such as gaming consoles and 4K Blu-ray players. Previously, Sonos faced audio lag issues when its soundbars were connected to external devices. By gaining greater control over the hardware, the company aims to address this concern. The Verge says. For TV, though, the box is expected to transmit lag-free audio to Sonos soundbars.

Is that enough to justify a potential $400 price tag, though? Sonos is known for offering premium products, but even the priciest gadget on our list of best media-streaming devices, the Apple TV 4K, comes in at under $200.
