Google Turns NotebookLM Into a Personal Tutor With Flashcards, Quizzes

Google is introducing a couple of interactive features to make the learning experience on NotebookLM more fun and engaging. Starting this week, users will see two new options in the Studio panel on the right: Flashcards and Quizzes.

Flashcards, as the name suggests, pull up questions based on the documents, notes, or reports you have added to the notebook. Once a question pops up, you can think of an answer and check if you’re right by clicking the “See answer” button below it. This action flips the card and presents the answer.

If you need further explanation, click the “Explain” button and wait for it to provide an AI-curated response. If satisfied, you can move on to the next flashcard. The aim here is to help students “memorize key terms, important dates and core concepts from your sources,” Google says.

The next addition is Quizzes. Again, this feature curates questions based on the material you have provided, but in a more gamified manner. You get multiple-choice questions with hints. You will see a red cross mark below that and a green tick below the right answer. Both will have a short explanation, but you can learn more by clicking the Explain button.

Both features will provide citations for their explanations, and you can share your sets with friends or colleagues.

Additionally, Google is bringing a Gemini-inspired Learning Guide to NotebookLM. This option will be available next week, and once selected, it will help students get to the final answer by asking them open-ended questions along the way.

By not providing an answer straight away, Learning Guide will help students build a “deeper understanding of the subject,” Google says, adding that it’s like having a personal tutor. ChatGPT’s version of the same feature is called Study Mode.

Google has also partnered with OpenStax to provide free, peer-reviewed textbooks within NotebookLM. Right now, you can get AI-curated notebooks for Biology, AP Biology, Introduction to Business, Chemistry, Psychology, and Principles of Management.

In the coming weeks, notebooks will also become available in Google Classroom. Teachers will be able to create and assign them. Google also made a couple of minor upgrades to existing reports and Audio Overviews. You can check them out on Google’s blog post.
