Buckeyes In a Nutshell
- Saturday’s game is Ohio State’s sixth in three weeks. The Buckeyes have won their last four games, earning wins over Detroit Mercy (14-4), Cleveland State (14-4), Bellarmine (16-4) and Air Force (17-11). The matchup vs. Virginia is the sixth of seven straight games the Buckeyes play at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium to open the 2025 season.
- The Buckeyes are averaging 14.80 goals per game and lead the Big Ten in the scoring offense category. After holding three consecutive opponents to just four goals apiece, the team has allowed just 8.40 goals per game. The mark ranks top 20 nationally.
- In goal for the Buckeyes, sophomore Caleb Fyock leads the Big Ten with a 4.85 goals against average and .654 save percentage, good for second and fifth in the country, respectively. He is 4-0 on the year.
- Jack Oldman is .602 from the faceoff X five games into his sophomore campaign at Ohio State. His efforts have helped the team win the faceoff battle in four of five games this season. The Pickering, Ontario native is atop the Big Ten with 7.40 ground balls per game.
- Alex Marinier continues to lead the team, and the conference, with 19 goals and points. He is second in the league with 3.8 goals per game. Marinier has tallied a goal in every game this season and multiple goals in all but one contest.
- Griffin Turner has a team-high eight assists in his first season as a Buckeye. He also has a point in every game this season with multiple points in four of five games.
- Ohio State’s 12.60 caused turnovers per game pace the conference and a third in the country. Cullen Brown has a league-leading 2.40 caused turnovers per game and Bobby Van Buren (1.60) and Zack Antoniou (1.50) are also top 10 in the Big Ten.
- The Buckeyes have capitalized on 50 percent (8-16) of their man-up opportunities on the season, the second-best rate in the league. Marinier leads the country with three EMO goals in five games. He also remains the only player in the Big Ten to score man-down.
- Ohio State will play two of it’s five-game conference schedule on national television. The games at Penn State (March 23) and vs. Maryland (April 12) will be televised on Big Ten Network. The Buckeyes’ final home game of the regular season vs. the Terrapins will now be at 2 p.m. Â
Van Buren, Marinier Named B1G POTW
- Marinier was named the conference co-Offensive Player of the Week and Van Buren added the Defensive Player of the Week nod after their week three performances for the Buckeyes.
- Van Buren combined for four ground balls and three caused turnovers in two games last week. The captain helped Ohio State hold Bellarmine to just four goals on the day for the team’s third straight game holding its opponent to four goals. His efforts also helped the Buckeyes keep Air Force to just four goals in the first three quarters.
- The Wingate, N.C. native tallied his first career point with an assist in the Air Force win and tied his career-high three caused turnovers for the second time this season in the Bellarmine win.
- Marinier scored 10 goals in the Buckeyes two wins last week over Bellarmine and Air Force. He recorded his second straight game with a hat trick with three goals in the win over the Knights. The Burlington, Ontario native added seven goals on eight shots in Saturday’s victory against the Falcons, including a first quarter hat trick and five goals in the first half.
- His seven goals were the most goals scored in a game by a Buckeye since the 2019 season and tied for seventh in the program record book for goals in a game.
- Both picked up their first career awards in the respective categories. The Buckeyes have earned two consecutive defensive player of the week awards.
History vs. Virginia
- Saturday’s meeting is the first between the teams in Columbus since the 2012 season. The teams have faced off in Columbus only twice prior to this season.Â
- Ohio State’s lone win in the series came in 2013 with a 16-10 victory in Charlottesville, Va.
- Virginia has the 8-1 advantage in the all-time series.
- The teams have met in the last three seasons with a neutral site matchup in 2023, a game in Charlottesville in 2024 and now in Columbus in 2025.
