No. 9 Ohio State Hosts Three Matches This Week



COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 9-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team takes on three Big Ten teams this week in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes will play No. 3 Michigan in a nonconference match at 4 p.m. Wednesday before rounding out the regular season schedule with conference matches against No. 24 Wisconsin at noon Saturday and Minnesota at 11 a.m. Sunday on Senior Day.
 
All matches are slated to be played outside at the Auer Tennis Complex. In the event of inclement weather, play will be moved inside the Ty Tucker Tennis Center. Admission and parking are free.

Ohio State currently holds a 16-2 record following a shutout against Penn State last Saturday. The Buckeyes hold a 10-1 Big Ten record on the season. Michigan is 19-3 overall and 12-0 in the B1G, Wisconsin holds a 16-3 record, with a 9-2 league ledger, and Minnesota is 10-14 (2-9 B1G) ahead of its road match against Penn State Friday.

The three members of the Buckeye women’s tennis Class of 2025 will be recognized before the match Sunday. The group includes Shelly Bereznyak (Bat Yam, Israel), Sydni Ratliff (Columbus, Ohio) and Dani Schoenly (Powell, Ohio). The trio has compiled more than 200 combined singles and doubles victories and all three have been in the ITA rankings, as well as part of three NCAA Tournament appearances. They are all standouts academically and have earned ITA Scholar-Athlete, Academic All-Big Ten and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar accolades.
 
In the Rankings

  • The Buckeyes are No. 9 in the ITA rankings released last week.
  • Four Buckeyes are in the singles rankings: No. 9 Luciana Perry, No. 31 Teah Chavez, No. 87 Sydni Ratliff and No. 100 Audrey Spencer.
  • In doubles, the duo of Perry and Chavez is No. 15.
  • Ohio State is one of six Big Ten teams ranked in the Top 25, joined by No. 3 Michigan, No. 16 Southern California, No. 18 Washington, No. 19 UCLA and No. 24 Wisconsin.

Buckeyes vs. Wolverines

  • Under Melissa Schaub, the Buckeyes hold an 8-14 record against Michigan. Ohio State first played Michigan in 1977.
  • The teams faced off earlier this season in Ann Arbor, with the Wolverines posting a 4-3 victory. The last match in Columbus between the squads was a 4-1 UM win March 15, 2024.
  • Wednesday will be a non-conference match between the teams.
  • Michigan is currently No. 3 in the ITA rankings as of April 8. They have four players ranked in singles: No. 3 Julia Fliegner, No. 34 Piper Charney, No. 40 Lily Jones, and No. 80 Emily Sartz-Lunde. The team has two duos ranked: Jessica Bernales and Jones are No. 27 and Charney and Bernales are No. 29.
  • The Wolverines are 19-3 this spring. They are 12-0 in the Big Ten and have clinched at least a share of the Big Ten regular season title. Last weekend, Michigan topped Oregon and Washington in Ann Arbor. They wrap up their league slate against Michigan State Saturday.

Buckeyes vs. Badgers

  • The Buckeyes hold a 10-1 record against the Badgers under head coach Melissa Schaub, with wins in the last 10 matches. The teams first played each other in 1976.
  • The last match was in 2023 when Ohio State shut out Wisconsin in a home match, 7-0.
  • Wisconsin is No. 24 in the ITA rankings this week. The Badgers have two ranked singles players: No. 8 Maria Sholokhova and No. 109 Taylor Cataldi. The duo of Sholokhova and Alina Mukhortova is No. 33 in doubles, and Sholokhova and Ariel Johnson are No. 46.
  • Wisconsin is 16-3 overall and 9-2 in the Big Ten after two home wins against Purdue and Indiana last weekend.

Buckeyes vs. Golden Gophers

  • Ohio State is 27-25 overall against Minnesota with the Buckeyes taking the last five matches.
  • The teams last played in 2023 when Ohio State prevailed 4-0 in a home match. The programs first met in 1978.
  • The Gophers are 10-14 overall this spring with a 2-9 conference record. Last weekend, the squad defeated Indiana and fell to Purdue.

 Buckeye This and That

  • Ohio State defeated Penn State, 7-0, in a home match last weekend in its last time out. It was their sixth Big Ten shutout of the season.
  • The Buckeyes enter the final weekend of the regular season in second place in the Big Ten with a 10-1 record. Michigan is first (12-0), with Washington and Wisconsin tied for third with matching 9-2 records, followed by USC and UCLA who are both 7-3.
  • Luciana Perry has the most overall singles wins for the Buckeyes with 27. Teah Chavez and Shelly Bereznyak are tied for second with 23 each. In dual play, Perry is 13-3, Bereznyak is 12-2, Nao Nishino is 9-2 and Chavez is undefeated at 10-0.
  • The duo of Chavez and Perry is 12-4 in doubles matches this spring to lead Ohio State. The tandem of Spencer and Nishino is 9-2. 
  • The Buckeyes are currently undefeated on courts two (14-0) and five (11-0) in singles through their first 18 dual matches.
  • Ohio State has won the doubles point in 14 of 18 matches this spring.
  • The Buckeyes are 8-0 at home this year heading into their three-match homestand.

The Schedule Ahead

  • The Buckeyes will travel to Ojai, Calif., to compete in the Big Ten Tournament April 23-27 at Libbey Park.
  • Seeds 5-12 will play in the first round on day one, with the top four seeds receiving a bye into the quarterfinals.
