No. 17 Ohio State Outlasts No. 10 McKendree, 3-2



COLUMBUS, Ohio — No. 17 Ohio State (12-10, 7-5) started strong and finished stronger in a 3-2 win Thursday against No. 10 McKendree (15-6, 10-2) at the Covelli Center. 
 
The Buckeyes won the first two sets before the Bearcats evened the match at two sets each. In the final and deciding fifth set, Ohio State got the win, 15-9, for its first win over a Top 10 team in Columbus since a 3-0 win over No. 10 Loyola Chicago April 8, 2023.
 
Ohio State won by scores of 25-18, 26-24, 19-25, 20-25, 15-9.
 
The Buckeyes were led by Stanislaw Chacinski (21) and Shane Wetzel (18) in kills. Wetzel reached 900 for his career, good for 19th in OSU history.
 
Daniel Henwood Rodriguez paced Ohio State with 50 assists and 14 digs. Chacinski also completed the double-double with 13 digs with Wetzel adding 10. Drew Hudson also had 11.  

How it Happened

 

Set 1 (OSU, 25-18)

The quick Buckeye offense jumped to a 4-1 lead to start the match following kills from Stanislaw Chacinski and Cole Young. The Bearcats tried to answer but a 4-3 Buckeye run capped with an ace from Daniel Henwood-Rodriguez brought Ohio State’s lead to 9-4. McKendree took its first timeout of the set trailing 13-6, following a 4-2 run from the Buckeyes. Ohio State kept the Bearcats at a distance, taking a 17-10 lead after a kill from Wetzel. An ace from Chacinski gave the Scarlet and Gray a 20-12 advantage. McKendree scored four consecutive points, bringing the score to 20-16 Ohio State, but an Aaron Grimm kill stopped the run to give the Buckeyes a 21-16 lead. Another kill from Wetzel brought the score to 24-18, and an illegal block from McKendree gave Ohio State the set 25-18. Chacinski added six kills in the set with Wetzel adding four.

 

 

 

 

Set 2 (OSU, 26-24)

The Bearcats scored three-consecutive points to start the set but a Young kill stopped the run at 3-1. McKendree kept going, taking a 7-2 lead after a block from Kevin Schuele and Rolen Lively, forcing the Buckeyes into their first timeout. After the break, Ohio State inched closer, closing the gap to 9-6 after kills from Wetzel and Grimm. A Bearcat net violation tied the score at 10-all following a 4-1 run from the Buckeyes. The score then went back-and-forth but a Wetzel kill brought the Ohio State lead to 16-14 and the Bearcats took a timeout. After the break, a McKendree service error and a Wetzel kill gave the Scarlet and Gray a 20-16 advantage. A 3-1 run by the Bearcats brought the score to 21-19 Buckeyes, forcing Ohio State to take another timeout. Coming out of the huddle, McKendree closed the gap, and a Bearcat block tied the score at 23-all. A kill from Chacinski tied it at 24-all. A Bearcat attack error brought the score to 25-24 Buckeyes and McKendree took a timeout. After the break, a block from Wetzel gave Ohio State the set 26-24 and a 2-0 advantage in the match. Chacinski added five kills in the set for a total of 11 after two sets. 

 

 

 

 

Set 3 (MCK, 25-19)

The third set started back-and-forth with neither team able to gain more than a one-point advantage until a 3-0 run from McKendree put the Bearcats up 8-5. A 5-3 run from McKendree brought its lead to 13-8 forcing Ohio State into taking its first timeout. After the break, McKendree kept a steady lead, bringing its advantage to 17-12 after a Buckeye attack error. A kill and an ace from Chacinski paired with a Bearcat serving error brought the score to 17-15. McKendree answered, scoring three consecutive of its own to take a 20-15 lead and forcing Ohio State into taking its final timeout. After the timeout, the Buckeyes inched closer but a string of attacking errors and a Bearcat kill gave McKendree the set 25-19.

 

 

Set 4 (MCK, 25-20)
The Buckeyes leaped to a 6-3 start in the fourth set thanks to a string of McKendree attacking errors. The Bearcats quickly answered, tying it at 6-all after back-to-back blocks from Schuele and Lively.  Three more Bearcat blocks and an Ohio State service error gave McKendree a 10-8 lead, forcing the Buckeyes into their first timeout. After the break, McKendree went on a 5-3 run, bringing the score to 15-11 and forcing another Ohio State timeout. A kill from Wetzel brought the score to 17-13 after the timeout. The Bearcats then kept a steady lead, taking a 21-15 advantage thanks to a kill from Sam Hoskin. Back-to-back aces from Wetzel brought the score to 22-18, and McKendree took its first timeout. Coming out of the huddle, the Buckeyes lasted two game points before another Bearcat block gave McKendree the set 25-20 and tied the match 2-all.
 

 

Set 5 (OSU, 15-9)

The fifth set started closely, but a Bearcat block and a kill from Schuele gave McKendree a 4-2 lead. Ohio State answered, tying it at 4-all thanks to a kill from Wetzel and a setting error on McKendree. The score was back-and-forth after that, and a kill from Chacinski tied it at 7-all. A McKendree attack error and an ace from Thomas Leahey put Ohio State on top 9-7. Back-to-back kills from Tyler Tharpe gave the Buckeyes a 12-8 advantage, forcing McKendree into a timeout. After the break, a kill from Henwood Rodriguez increased Ohio State’s lead to 13-8. Kills from Chacinski and Young gave Ohio State the set 15-9 and the match 3-2.
