COLUMBUS, Ohio – After dropping the opening marathon set 30-28, No. 15 Ohio State (6-7, 3-2) took the next three at Lindenwood (3-8, 0-5) for a 3-1 win to complete the season series with the Lions in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Saturday in St. Charles, Missouri.
The Buckeyes won by scores of 28-30, 25-22, 25-18, 25-22.
Shane Wetzel and Stanislaw Chacinski led both teams with 17 kills apiece. Wetzel finished the match with 799 career kills. Chacinski hit .640 on 25 swings in the win.
Rookie setter Daniel Henwood Rodriguez finished with 49 assists to go with a match high six digs.
Aaron Grimm made his first career appearance with a start at middle blocker. He recorded the match-winning kill in the fourth set. He finished with six kills on 12 swings in his debut.
Set 1 (LIN, 30-28)
Stanislaw Chacinski recorded the opening kill for the Buckeyes from the back row. Setter Daniel Henwood Rodriguez then won a joust at the net to tie the match at 2-all. Ohio State took a 5-3 lead on a Chacinski kill and Cole Young ace. The Lions took a 7-5 lead after a 4-0 run. The Buckeyes tied it after Kyle Teune ace and Lindenwood error. The Lions scored three of the next four for a 10-8 lead. Ohio State countered with a 3-1 run to tie the set at 11-all. Another 3-1 run made it 14-12 Buckeyes. Ohio State was the first to 20 after a service error by the Lions for a 20-17 lead. Ohio State called timeout with a 20-19 lead after a 3-1 Lindenwood run. The Lions tied it at 20 out of the break before a Wetzel kill put the Buckeyes back on top. Lindenwood took a 22-21 lead after a 3-1 run leading to Ohio State’s final timeout. Ohio State tied the set at 24-all after a DHR ace. The teams traded service errors to make it 27-26 Buckeyes. The Lions tied with a kill before Wetzel delivered a rocket for the lead but Lindenwood scored the next three to win 30-28.
Set 2 (OSU, 25-22)
Chacinski opened with a kill and two aces for a 3-0 lead for the Buckeyes. A Young kill kept the Buckeyes up by three at 8-5. The Lions tied it with a 3-0 run. Ohio State took an 11-8 lead on kills by Chacinski and Aaron Grimm, who earned his first career kill in his first career appearance as a Buckeye. The Lions rallied to go up 15-14 after a 4-1 run. Ohio State took a 19-18 on a DHR ace. The Buckeyes took a 21-19 lead after a 4-1 run leading to a Lindenwood timeout. The Buckeyes reached set point before the Lions’ final timeout down 24-21. Wetzel then ended it with his ninth kill for a 25-22 win for the Buckeyes.
Set 3 (OSU, 25-18)
Young and Chacinski opened with kills to help Ohio State out to a 3-1 lead. Chacinski added another kill to make it 6-3 Buckeyes. The Ohio State block (Wetzel/Grimm) and a Wetzel kill upped the lead to 8-3 before a Lindenwood timeout. Another Wetzel kill made it 10-5 Buckeyes. Young adds a kill and solo block for a 12-6 lead for the Buckeyes. Wetzel keeps the advantage at six (16-10) with a kill. A Chacinski ace and three Wetzel kills leads to a Lindenwood timeout with the Buckeyes leading 19-11. A kill by Grimm from the middle and a Lions error made it 22-13 Ohio State. A Wetzel kill led to set point, 24-18, before the Buckeyes won it 25-18.
Set 4 (OSU, 25-22)
Once again, Chacinski starts the Buckeyes off with a kill. The teams traded points before a Lions ace gave Lindenwood a 7-5 lead. A Chacinski kill and two Wetzel aces put the Buckeyes up 9-8. A Grimm block after kills by Chacinski and Young gave the Buckeyes the edge at 13-10. Lindenwood countered with a 3-0 run for the tie. A Wetzel kill and DHR ace leads to the media timeout with the Buckeyes up 15-13. Chacinski and Wetzel both with 16 kills after a Chacinski blast gives Ohio State a 17-15 lead. DHR gets a kill for a 20-18 lead. Wetzel makes it 21-18 with a kill, leading to a Lindenwood timeout. Grimm then to the set (25-22) and match-winning kill for the Buckeyes.
