Round One (Tuesday)
Luciana Perry, a No. 9-16 seed, came from a set down to defeat Penn’s Esha Velaga. In the first set, the Quaker jumped out to a 4-1 lead and Perry was unable to get back on serve, falling 6-4. The Buckeye two-time All-American dropped just three games the rest of the way. She opened the second set with a 4-0 lead en route to a 6-1 win. In the third set, after four consecutive holds, Perry broke for a 3-2 advantage and did not drop another game for a 6-2 victory.
In one of the first matches of the day, No. 7 seed Teah Chavez fell to Vanderbilt’s Valeria Ray. In the first set, Chavez had an early break for a 3-2 lead, but the Quaker won four of the next five games to take the set, 6-4. Nishino dropped her match against NC State’s Mia Slama in straight sets. Nishino was up 2-0 before Slama went on a six-game run to close out the first set, 6-2. Slama extended her streak to the first three games of the second set.
