Feldman Delivers Late, No. 4 Ohio State Outlasts No. 17 Rutgers, 17-15



COLUMBUS, Ohio — Nick Feldman delivered another third-period takedown to earn the deciding team points in No. 4 Ohio State’s (10-0, 2-0) 17-15 comeback win over No. 17 Rutgers (9-3, 1-1) Sunday at the Covelli Center (3,757).

Only one of the 10 matches were decided with bonus points in the narrow victory by the Buckeyes. Trailing 6-0 early, Ohio State’s Jesse Mendez earned five points for the Buckeyes with a 17-2 win by technical fall in his match at 141.  

Dylan D’Emilio gave the Buckeyes their first lead at 8-6 with a 2-1 win over No. 24 Andrew Clark at 149. Ohio State kept its lead with wins by Sammy Sasso (157) and Carson Kharchla (174). Rutgers then won at 184 and took the lead at 15-14 with a win at 197 when No. 18 John Poznanski got a late third-period takedown for a 5-4 win over Ohio State’s Seth Shumate.

Feldman and No. 8 Yaraslau Slavikouski then tangled to decide the match. With the matched tied at 1-all late in the third, Feldman to the match-winning takedown to secure the win for the undefeated Buckeyes. 

How it Happened

125-No. 16 Dean Peterson (RUT) def. No. 10 Brendan McCrone (OSU) | D, 11-4

Peterson scored the first takedown and after a McCrone escape Rutgers led 3-1. Peterson added a takedown and a two-point nearfall to lead 8-1. Rutgers challenged the call of only a two-point nearfall but the call was confirmed. McCrone added another escape before a Peterson takedown made it 11-2 after three minutes. There was no scoring in the second period. McCrone chose top to open the third. McCrone was awarded a stalling point but fell 11-4 by decision after a point for riding time for Ohio State. 

133-No. 17 Dylan Shawver (RUT) def. No. 9 Nic Bouzakis (OSU) | D, 4-3

There was no scoring in the opening period. Bouzakis escaped to open the second to lead 1-0 after five minutes. Shawver tied it at 1-all with an escape in the third. Shawver got a takedown followed by a Bouzakis escape. Bouzakis was awarded a point for stalling but fell 4-3 by decision. 

141-No. 1 Jesse Mendez (OSU) def. Max Hermes (RUT) | TF, 17-2

A Mendez takedown and Hermes escape made it 3-1 Buckeyes. Mendez repeated the sequence two more times for a 9-3 advantage. Mendez added a three-point nearfall to lead 12-2 after the first. Mendez was awarded a point on a stalling call and added a takedown to lead 16-2 after two periods. Mendez escaped to open the third to win by technical fall, 17-2. 

149-No. 12 Dylan D’Emilio (OSU) def. No. 24 Andrew Clark (RUT) | D, 2-1 TB-2

Both wrestlers were given stalling warnings but neither scored in the opening period. D’Emilio earned an escape point to open the second to lead 1-0 after five minutes. Clark evened the match at 1-all with an early escape in the third. The wrestlers scrambled at the end of the final period but there were no points awarded to send the bout to sudden victory. There was no scoring in sudden victory period. D’Emilio scored a point in the first overtime with an escape. Clark did not score in the second to give the win to D’Emilio, 2-1. 

157-No. 11 Sammy Sasso (OSU) def. Conner Harer (RUT) | D, 3-2

Ohio State challenged a no call for back points before Sasso was awarded a takedown for a 3-0 lead. After a review, no additional points were awarded. Harer earned an escape point to trail 3-1 after the opening period. Harer added another escape in the second to make it 3-2 Sasso after five minutes. Sasso held off Harer in the third to win by decision, 3-2.

165-Andrew Barbosa (RUT) def. e’Than Birden (OSU) | D, 2-1, TB-2

There was no scoring in the opening period. Birden chose down to open the second and earned an escape for a 1-0 lead after five minutes. Barbos evened the bout with an escape in the third. The match went to sudden victory tied at 1-all. There was no scoring in the two-minute sudden victory. In the first overtime, Birden deferred and Rutgers chose bottom and earned an escape late in the 30 second overtime. From the bottom in the second overtime, Birden did not score to fall 2-1. 

174-No. 9 Carson Kharchla (OSU) def. No. 23 Jackson Turley (RUT) | D, 3-2

Kharchla got the first points of the bout with a takedown after a scramble. Turley escaped to make it 3-1 Buckeyes. Turley made it 3-2 with an escape in the second. Kharchla held on to win by decision, 3-2, with no scoring in the third. 

184-Shane Cartagena-Walsh (RUT) def. No. 14 Ryder Rogotzke (OSU) | D, 6-4

After three minutes there was no score. Rogotzke scored first with an escape early in the second. Rogotzke added a point with a stalling call against Rutgers for a 2-0 lead after five minutes. Cartagena-Walsh scored a takedown followed by a Rogotzke escape to tie it at 3-all. Cartagena-Walsh added another takedown. Rogotzke escaped but Cartagena-Walsh held on for the 6-4 win by decision. 

197-No. 18 John Poznanski (RUT) def. Seth Shumate (OSU) | D, 5-4

After a scoreless first period, Poznanski scored first with an escape early in the second. Officials stopped the match after a minute into the second to review a potential takedown for Shumate that was not originally called. No points were awarded after a review. Shumate started from the down position in the third and escaped to tie the match at 1-all. Shumate then added a takedown to lead 4-1. Poznanski escaped to make it 4-2. Poznanski then got a late takedown to win 5-4 by decision. 

HWT-No. 7 Nick Feldman (OSU) def. No. 8 Yaraslau Slavikouski (RUT) | D, 4-1

Feldman opened from the bottom position in the second period after a scoreless opening three minutes. Feldman got the escape for the only scoring in the second period to head to the third with a 1-0 advantage. Slavikouski tied it at 1-all with a quick escape in the third. Feldman got a late takedown with under 30 seconds left and held on to win 4-1 by decision and secure the team victory for the Buckeyes.
