BOWLING GREEN, OhioThe Bowling Green State University volleyball team will continue their season on Saturday (Dec. 14) against St. John’s in the Fab Four round of the NIVC. The match will take place at St. John’s Carnesecca Arena with a 7 p.m. start. The winner will continue on to the NIVC Championship against Arizona. The Falcons have registered three wins in the NIVC, topping Binghamton and Wright State at home and DePaul on the road. Bowling Green began the postseason with a victory over Binghamton on Dec. 4 at the Stroh Center. BGSU followed it up on Dec. 5 by topping Wright State before hitting the road and defeating DePaul on Dec. 9. All three matches concluded in 3-1 final scores. The Falcons have now won 24 matches this year, the most during Coach Tomic’s time at BGSU. This also marks the first time under Tomic the Falcons have recorded multiple postseason wins in the same and just the third time in program history. Additionally, it is just the third time in MAC history that a team has won three or more postseason matches in the same season, joining the 1992 BGSU team that won five matches and the 1991 Miami (OH) team that won four. Both of those teams also tallied the wins in the NIVC. 

As for St. John’s path to the Fab Four, they began the NIVC with road wins over North Carolina A&T and Virginia before returning home to Queens, besting UConn in the Great 8 at Carnesecca Arena. Before the NIVC, St. John’s lost to DePaul in the Big East Tournament by a 3-0 score. As for the season overall, St. John’s finished with a 23-12 record while going 10-8 within the Big East. The Red Storm holds a record of 15-3 when playing at home this year, falling to Marquette on Oct. 11, Creighton on Oct. 12 and UConn on Nov. 22 during the regular season. 

This season, Bowling Green captured the 2024 MAC Championship, going 16-2 within conference competition with the only losses being in five sets. At the conclusion of the season, the Mid-American Conference announced the All-MAC awards for the season. In total, six different Falcons collected seven total awards. Lauryn Hovey was named MAC Player of the Year and First Team All-MAC while head coach Danijela Tomic was named MAC Coach of the Year. Alexis Mettille and Amanda Otten joined Hovey on the First Team while Jessica Andrews and Mia Tyler were named Second Team All-MAC. Additionally, Hovey was named AVCA All-Region, earning the honor for the third-consecutive season, becoming just the third player in program history to be named three times.
