COLUMBUS, Ohio — WTOL 11 brought home eight awards from Sunday’s Ohio Associated Press Media Editors (APME) contest. The awards ceremony took place in Columbus, where several Ohio media outlets attended and were recognized for journalistic excellence.
The Ohio APME is an annual journalism contest. The Ohio-based organization honors individuals and media outlets in platforms like television, radio and print, through several journalistic categories.
The WTOL 11 Investigates team alone won four awards, including:
- First place in “Best Streaming Content” for the exclusive jailhouse interview with Robert Jobe – the man who shot and killed a Toledo detective when he was a teenager.
- First place in “Best Investigative Reporting” for the team’s extensive reporting and successful push for a conviction integrity unit in Lucas County. The push goes back to the team’s 2019 investigation into the 1998 killing of a Toledo teenager.
- First place in “Best Continuing Coverage” for Investigative Reporter Brian Dugger’s and Producer Silas Tsang’s investigation into complaints about the Ohio Turnpike’s tolling system’s costs. This story also won an Emmy award during the 56th Annual NATAS Central Great Lakes Emmy Awards ceremony.
- Second place in “Best Enterprise Reporting” for the team’s efforts in following Toledo’s most prolific serial killer facing a parole hearing.
“This was an amazing investigative series that created real change – not just for the two cases you profiled but for anyone who may be wrongfully convicted in Lucas County,” one judge said about 11 Investigates’ reporting and push for a conviction integrity unit in Lucas County. “This is what journalism is all about.”
Other Ohio APME awards and achievements for individuals and the station include:
- Former photojournalist Paul Kwapich was inducted into the Ohio APME’s Hall of Fame.
- Tsang won “Best Producer” for WTOL 11’s funeral coverage of Toledo Fire and Rescue’s PIO Sterling “Butch” Rahe.
- Photojournalist Joe Cromer won “Best Photographer.”
- Cromer won second place in “Best Feature Reporting” for his story titled “Positive Messages of Hope.“
- WTOL 11 Sports won second place in “Best Sports” for their story on a Blissfield man who inspired his community through longstanding high school athletics support.
