Woman in critical condition after suspected overdose at Safety Building while in police custody

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A woman in Toledo Police custody at the Safety Building on Sunday morning overdosed after ingesting an unknown substance, police said.

The woman, 32-year-old Kiara Robinson, was listed in critical condition at a hospital Sunday night. Police initially arrested her for improperly handling a firearm in a vehicle, and possession of a controlled substance.

An officer said they saw her asleep behind the wheel of a vehicle just before 5 a.m. on West Sylvania Avenue near Heatherstone Place with the driver’s side door open. The officer said they saw a gun on the passenger seat.

The officer woke Robinson up and she got out of the car. Police said as officers were speaking to her, she reached into her pocket to get something, and dropped a plastic bag with hydrocodone pills.

Police took her into custody and arrested her on a fourth-degree felony charge of improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle.

Police transported her to the Safety Building and put her in a holding cell. Then, she went to an interview room to speak with a detective, police said.

After the interview, the arresting officer took her back to a holding cell.

Investigators said during the time when the detective exited the room and the arresting officer entered, she retrieved an “unknown white substance” that she was carrying on her and ingested it. Police believed she overdosed once she got back to the holding cell.

Officers administered two doses of Narcan before firefighters transported her to an area hospital.

She’s currently in critical condition, police said.
