The distillery sources all of its grains and ingredients from northwest Ohio.
WHITEHOUSE, Ohio — What used to be the Whitehouse Savings Bank is now Adventure Spirits Distillery. The building was a bank for over 100 years before closing down.
A few years back, Joe Carter and Barry Beale were members of the 180th Fighter Wing, looking for their next act.
“When I was contemplating retiring … I fell in love with the spirits industry,” Carter said. “One of my favorite things to do is to go down to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, visit the distilleries. … I said ‘that’s what we’re going to do. I’m going to bring those experiences up to Ohio.'”
The two wanted to do everything in-house, from the grain mashing and fermenting, to the distilling and aging, as well as letting customers get a first-hand look.
“So if you want to not have to travel down to Kentucky to do a tour, a tasting, pull whiskey out of a barrel, fill your own bottle … you only have to come to Whitehouse,” Carter said.
The entire process happens in a small 800-square-foot room in the back. The pair put an emphasis on sourcing almost all of their inventory locally.
“All of our grain is going to come from those local farmers,” Carter said. “We’re developing terms to have that grain milled at the Ludwig Mill in Grand Rapids … Everything that we can do locally, we’re doing as local as we can.”
Carter and Beale say the thing that makes their business successful is that they connect with their neighbors and anyone who walks in the door.
“The community has embraced us quite a bit. All the city leaders, they’ve very much welcomed us into the community,” Beale said.
The distillery is open from 4-10 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
