TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – With the finals series in full glide, fish fans hope that the Walleye’s winning energy returns.
“Well, I hope the heck we win again!” said fan Willy Sohnly.
Toledo’s hockey team is chasing after the coveted championship. It would be the Walley’s first Kelly Cup if they can win the best-of-seven games.
“Being a big fan, that’s always the end-goal at the end of the year, I just want it for the guys, I want it for the city, I want it for everyone,” said fan Josie Vargo.
After two games in Toledo playing the Canadian Trois-Rivieres, the series is heading north for three games. Some die-hard fans said they would cross the border to cheer on Toledo’s team.
“If they go down two games, I might go to Canada for the third,” said Joe Lehmann. “So they’re gonna be three there. So we’re going to see, we’re going to give it our best. We’re hoping.”
On Monday night, the energy flowed through the Huntington Center and out onto the watch party at Fifth Third Field across the street. Fans were excited as they watched the game on the big screen.
“It’s been great, we got a pretty good crowd out here tonight for a Monday night,” said fan Kevin Ashenfelter. “Weather’s great. Rooting on the fish!”
Local bars also felt the spirit of T-Town as patrons packed the businesses before the game. Whiskey Red Saloon Owner Jeffrey Jones said fans have been excited all playoffs, bringing a boost to his bar and others.
“It’s unbelievable. The fans, they’re just out of control,” Jones said, smiling. “I mean, they’re in here, they’re screaming, they’re yelling, they’re having a good time. Everybody’s super excited for the Walleye to bring the championship home to Toledo.”
With the series now tied up, fans said they are eagerly watching to see what happens next, and of course, rooting for their fish.
