Urban farm in Junction Neighborhood providing inner city access to fresh produce

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Johnson Produce Market is located right in the Junction Neighborhood on Nebraska Ave. This area has little access to healthy, fresh food, and David D. Johnson planted his farm right in the city, where the community is in the greatest need.

“We always had a model that you can come here and get something that we grow. Washed, cleaned, prepared, on the table, and eaten within an hour because it’s that fresh,” Johnson said.

Johnson’s Produce Market started back in 1988, when its produce was first sold on a pickup truck. Before that, Johnson’s passion for farming derives from his family history. Both sides of his family were sharecroppers and farmers in Georgia.

“We are from Albany, Georgia, which is the place of the first mass demonstrations in Civil Rights,” Johnson said. “It always became a movement for us, to moving to a better way of thinking, of not only being a consumer of the product but being a part of where the product comes from”

Johnson is a former educator, and this week he is hosting students from the University of Toledo to teach them more about the company’s history, urban farming and the importance of valuing fresh food.

Johnson Produce Market is located at 524 Pulaski St., Toledo, OH.
