TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Members of the United Steelworkers are planning to go on strike against Libbey Glass late Friday night.
A spokesperson for USW District 1 said on Friday that its members plan to walk out at 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 22 to begin a strike over what they called unfair labor practices from Libbey.
A statement from USW leadership to members said the union notified the company Thursday that its members were available all day Thursday and Friday to continue to work toward a “fair and equitable contract,” but said Libbey left the bargaining table Thursday and wasn’t available on Friday.
An earlier statement from Libbey Glass this week said it has approached negotiations with “sincerity and commitment” for more than ten months, adding that Libbey leadership is committed to good-faith negotiations in an effort to reach an agreement that benefits both union members and the company.
“We are confident that the current offers represented are fair and attractive and will bring long-term stability and transparency for all parties involved,” the statement from Libbey read. “This offer is the result of extensive collaboration, shaped through more than 70 meetings with local and regional union leaders since negotiations began October 1, 2024. Libbey’s current offers reflect both market standards and competitive benchmarks.”
The union said its members of Locals 59M, 65Y, and 700T made financial sacrifices to the tune of $31.8 million in recent years.
“The employees at Libbey Glass made significant sacrifices in their pay and benefits to bring Libbey out of bankruptcy and liquidation in 2020,” a statement from USW district 1 Director Donnie Blatt said this week. “Then the USW worked with the Company and the U.S. Department of Energy for another $45 million grant, to help the Company restructure and reorganize. Now that the Company is on good financial footing, they are coming back again to take more from their employees.”
