Two hospitalized after shooting in Monroe County

The two victims were found at an apartment around 8:45 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday, the Monroe County sheriff said a 15-year-old suspect was arrested near the scene.

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. — Two people had to be taken to the hospital on Saturday evening after being shot by a teenage suspect in Monroe County.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says they responded to a call at the Charring Square Apartments on Greenwycke Lane off South Dixie Highway around 8:45 p.m. Saturday.

When deputies arrived, they found two victims with gunshot wounds.

Both victims were taken to the hospital for treatment. Their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening at this time and they are in stable condition as of Sunday morning, according to Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough.

A third victim was not struck in the shooting, which Goodnough described in a press release as a drive-by.

During the initial response to the shooting, deputies were told that the suspected vehicle was a tan sedan with “several occupants” and had fled the scene.

A deputy made a traffic stop on a vehicle matching the description pulling out of Greenwycke Lane onto South Dixie Highway. Investigators determined through video evidence and witness statements that the vehicle stopped by the deputy was the suspected vehicle. However, the suspected shooter had fled the car on foot.

Investigators identified the suspected shooter as a 15-year-old who lives near the scene in the 6100 block of Greenwycke Lane, Goodnough said. Detectives executed a search warrant and took the 15-year-old suspect into custody.

The suspect, whose name was withheld, was booked into the Monroe County Youth Center on three counts of assault with intent to murder and is awaiting a petition to be authorized and a preliminary hearing.

The case remains under investigation. If you have any information on the shooting, you are asked to call Monroe County detectives at 734-240-7530.
