The team’s exhibition spring game on 419 Day turned into a food drive, gathering two full boxes of food for the pantry.
TOLEDO, Ohio — The University of Toledo women’s volleyball team is giving back to the Toledo community by way of the Ronald McDonald House.
The team had an exhibition spring scrimmage game with the Oakland Grizzlies on 419 Day and decided to also make it a food drive.
Fans were encouraged to bring snacks and other pantry items to help families with children receiving medical care from hospitals in the area. The team brought in two full boxes of food to stock the Ronald McDonald House’s pantry.
Anna Alford, a senior on the volleyball team, said one of the main goals of the team is to give back to each other and the community.
“One of our things that we come back to a lot is leave things better than you found it,” Alford said. “I think that this is just a great way to help give back.”
Chad Bringman, the executive director at Ronald McDonald Charities, said he was surprised by the amount of food the team brought.
“We have as many as 28 families with us every single day,” Bringman said. “This stuff gets put into use right away, and it is very much appreciated.”
This is the first time the women’s volleyball team and Ronald McDonald House have teamed up for a food drive.
