TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Some good news about that contamination found around Toledo’s raw water supply. It was discovered as plans progressed to put in a new supply line. New test results confirm the contamination did not get into the water.
The issue is near Oregon at Envirosafe. The contamination that was located brought on many questions about where the project goes from here. So far it’s all on track.
A 78-inch water line buried underground carries raw lake water from the city’s intake, to the Collins Park water treatment plant. As plans began to build a new line, contaminants were found near that supply line that runs under this hazardous material landfill called Envirosafe. Further testing has confirmed none of the contaminates go into the actual water.
“When we became aware of it we looked at testing we do on an annual basis on the raw water coming into the plant and compared it to what might in the landfills so we did some special sampling just for the purpose of filling in gaps with what we’ve always done and what might be out there. We did get those results back. The water is fine, it’s safe and always has been,” said Andy McClure, Commissioner of Plant Operations.
The actual contaminant has not been identified yet. That will take about another month or so. No major changes to the project are planned because of this, except the order in which the three-part project is completed. That’s not expected to change to costs.
“That will give us plenty of time to make sure we’re doing the right thing and consider all of the alternatives,” said McClure.
Members of the public can weigh in on the project next Wednesday. Public utilities staff members will be at Eisenhower Intermediate School in Oregon to brief people on the nearly nine-mile-long project going through both Oregon and Toledo.
“So that we can tell them here’s the scope of work, here is what construction will look like. There could be some road closures from time to time,” said McClure.
That meeting at Eisenhower school starts at 6 p-m. Assuming the Envirosafe issue does not cause major delays, this additional raw water supply project is expected to go into 2028.
