Toledo Police Department aiming to crack down on after-hours clubs after violent weekend
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The Toledo Police Department is aiming to crack down on after-hours clubs after there were shootings at two over Halloween weekend.
“We consider an after-hours location to be anything that is working outside the normal bar hours. I would say after that 2 a.m. or that last call period. Then you are working outside the law,” Lieutenant Adam Fish said.
The lieutenant said it is difficult to spot these after-hours clubs due to how sporadic they can be, and due to them often taking place during a busy time for officers.
A 19-year-old was killed at the after-hours club over Halloween weekend in a plaza off Reynolds Road. It’s the second time there has been an after-hours club shooting in that plaza since 2023.
“That’s the tricky part. We know that these locations exist, but they are not running during normal business hours. It might not be every weekend; it might be that they are having something on a Thursday, then they go quiet for a couple of weeks and then it’s something like this past weekend for a Halloween event. It’s hard for us to know they are up and running until it’s almost too late. For this weekend, there were guns involved and it cost somebody their life,” Fish said.
Lieutenant Fish said if a business is caught operating or selling alcohol outside of what they are licensed to do, it can result in a suspension or permanent closure of the business.
The lieutenant is encouraging anyone who notices an after-hours club taking place to report it to the police in hopes of stopping any more violence.
