Toledo mother recounts son’s fatal shooting

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Renita Davis says she prays over her son’s memorial on her front porch every day.

“He was my world,” Davis said. “He kept me strong.”

14-year-old Davion Boone was shot and killed inside their home on Walker Avenue near Eleanor last week.

“He didn’t even get to experience what being a teenager really was before his life ended,” she said.

Boone was a freshman at Start High School. His mother says he loved making music videos and playing football. She said his older brothers coached him on a youth team.

“He was very fast, very fast,” Davis said. “That boy could run and jump over stuff with no hands.”

Davis said her son was playing with his 14-year-old friend that day when she got home from work. She says that after she walked through the door, her youngest son came to her, saying Davion’s friend had a gun in the house.

“I searched him,” Davis said. “I looked them in their face and said, ‘If there is a weapon in here that shouldn’t be, you’re all in trouble’.”

Davis said she told the friend to leave and went to her room to change out of her work uniform.

“Not even two minutes later, I get a knock, a bang on my door saying my baby was shot,” Davis said. “No, I didn’t hear no gun go off, no, I didn’t.”

Davis said that’s when the family called 911. Police arrested the suspect and charged him with reckless homicide. Boone was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Davis said the community has wrapped their arms around her and her family to support them during this time.

The pastor of Mt. Nebo Baptist, Pastor Cedric Brock, said they’re raising money for Davis and her four other boys.

“We just want to be a help to this family,” Pastor Brock said. “This is a moment that we must show forth true ministry. That we talk, but now we want to walk.”

The church will collect donations at the funeral service on Oct. 10 at 11 a.m. The church address is 831 N Detroit Avenue, Toledo, Ohio 43607.

Until then, Davis said her faith is keeping her going.

“I know he’s with the lord, so I am at peace,” Davis said.

13 Action News reached out to Toledo Police to ask if officers know where the gun came from. A public information officer said he could not give any more information at this time.
