Toledo man indicted by grand jury after child dies from blunt force injury

Alexander Butler, 23, told police the injury was accidental. But his statement didn’t align with medical reports of the injury, according to court documents.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A Toledo man was indicted Thursday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court on multiple charges following the death of a child earlier this month.

Alexander Butler, 23, is facing two counts of felonious assault and four counts of endangering children.

According to court documents, Toledo police and fire crews went to a home for a reportedly injured child on July 17 and found a girl, whose age and identity are not known at this time, unresponsive. She was taken to the ProMedica Toledo Hospital, where she died from a head injury.

Butler told police “that the injury was sustained accidentally,” but his statement didn’t align with medical reports. “The severity of the injury does not match with the claim of how it was sustained, and it appears the injury was not caused accidentally,” court documents say.

Butler was also arrested for criminal trespassing the day after at the same hospital, although it’s unclear if the two incidents are related at this time.

Another court document says he went onto the hospital property after police and security gave him “numerous verbal trespass notices” and told him not to return unless he needed treatment.
