Yondota Park in east Toledo received $30,000 to finish building its playground. The park has not had one for over three decades.
TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo City Council approved $85,000 in funding to build new playgrounds at two parks and another $50,000 to install new bleachers at another during Tuesday’s meeting.
A portion of the money for the playgrounds — $30,000 — allows crews to begin work on a long-awaited playground at Yondota Park in east Toledo, which has been without one for over three decades. The rest of the money is for Ashley Park in south Toledo, and the bleachers will be installed at Ravine Park II in east Toledo.
Council also approved a $50,000 grant for ConnecToledo to run the 2025 summer concert series at Promenade Park.
Council also approved some of the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department’s responsibilities regarding lead safety and compliance to be transferred to the city.
Special use permits for a hospital at 3325, 3329 and 3350 Collingwood Blvd. and a gas station at 1565 Alexis Road both passed unanimously, with council also changing zoning maps for the former.
But, all four of the special use permits for tobacco shops on this meeting’s agenda failed. Prior to the vote on the first one at 3026 Glendale Ave., council member Vanice Williams railed against the negative health effects caused by tobacco and urged everyone else on the dais to vote against the permits.
Council President Carrie Hartman and member Mac Driscoll voted for the shops at Glendale Avenue and 606 N. Reynolds Road, but voted against ones at 1122 N. Byrne Road and 1501 S. Detroit Ave.
The Toledo Police Department’s domestic violence unit received a grant of $28,508.04 from the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.
