Toledo approves more use of license plate readers

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – We’ll have another year of those license plate readers in the city of Toledo.

City council members have approved their operation again.

They’re described as another tool for Toledo Police and police officers throughout the area. The Toledo ones look like they’re not going anywhere.

City council made it official Wednesday by approving another year’s worth of funding for the dozens of Flock cameras. That cost will be just about $282,000.

These cameras scan license plates, looking for things like stolen vehicles or vehicles wanted in connection with a serious crime. That information then heads to the police department’s real-time crime center.

Toledo isn’t the only department with cameras, but it was one of the first.

It was not a unanimous vote, as councilman Nick Komives was a ‘No’ vote.

Councilman John Hobbs was a ‘Yes’ and believes technology like this can help solve violent crime, like the deadly shooting we saw at an after-hours club recently.

“To explore and be able to and get more out of tracking down senseless crimes. I think those FLOCK cameras will help in those kinds of incidents when we have drive-by shootings or someone is shooting in a parking space somewhere and they take off. Hopefully, we have FLOCK cameras in the right spaces so we are able to track down these murderers,” said Hobbs.

This new approval for the FLOCK cameras is for a three-year agreement.
