The suspects — aged 13, 14 and 17 — are charged with murder for allegedly shooting Jaycion Bennett, 17, in south Toledo on July 4.
TOLEDO, Ohio — Police have arrested three teenage suspects in the homicide of a 17-year-old in south Toledo on July 4.
The suspects were arrested Monday, according to Toledo police. They are accused of shooting and killing Jaycion Bennett, 17, in the 400 block of Baden Street on Friday.
The suspects, identified by police as a 13-year-old, a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old, are all charged with murder. They had initial court appearances Tuesday.
It is WTOL 11 policy to not name juvenile suspects unless they are tried as adults.
The 13-year-old is not eligible to be tried as an adult, a spokesperson for the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office said. However, the 14-year-old and 17-year-old could be tried as adults.
At the time of the shooting, all three teens were on probation, according to the prosecutor’s office. The shooting allegedly began as a gun sale with the victim.
Bennett’s death was ruled a homicide caused by gunshot wounds to the chest, back and left upper arm, according to an autopsy report from the Lucas County Coroner’s Office.
Officers responded to the scene in the 400 block of Baden Street at South Avenue, just east of the Anthony Wayne Trail, shortly before 5 p.m. on Friday, and located two victims who had been shot at least once.
Toledo police Lt. Dan Gerken said three people, including Bennett and a female victim, were in a vehicle when it was shot at. The third person was uninjured. The female victim is expected to recover.
