The free annual event will feature new pieces as well as old favorites from the choir.
CAREY, Ohio — The Ecuemnical Choir will be performing its traditional Christmas concert in Carey again this year.
The Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation is hosting the free event and invites the community to attend, according to a press release issued by the Basillica on Sunday.
The Ecuemnical choir will present a concert of Christmas themed music and sacred Advent music under the direction of Anthony Gallina, the Basilica’s Director of Music Ministries. The choir will feature approximately 50 voices, a brass quintet, and a cello this year.
Some of the works that will be presented include: “O Holy Night” by René Clausen, “Prepare!” by Joseph M. Martin, “O Come, Emmanuel” by Elaine Hagenberg, “O Nata Lux” by Douglas Byler, “Go Tell it on the Mountain” by Philip Kern.
There is no cost to attend the event according to the press release. However, there will be a free will offering taken up about half way through the concert. Following the concert, all in attendance are invited to a reception in the basilica’s Shrine Cafeteria.
The Carey Ecumenical Choir was founded in 1971 by John Raymaley, James Roynon, Ronald Croy, and Brother Paul Faroh. The Choir has performed a Christmas concert almost every year since, with an exception of 1984 due to a lack of director. The only other hiatus the choir had was during the COVID pandemic from 2020-2022.
The event will take place at the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation on 315 Clay street in Carey, Ohio at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14.
