Residents say the sinkhole by Arlington and Francis avenues has been getting worse since September.
TOLEDO, Ohio — Residents of a south Toledo neighborhood are voicing frustration over a sinkhole on Arlington and Francis avenues they say has been growing for months, raising safety concerns and obstructing traffic.
The city previously patched the sinkhole, but residents said it has sunk again and worsened since September.
“The city needs to get it fixed sooner rather than later,” said Melissa Stevens, who lives by the sinkhole.
The sinkhole blocks half the road and forces drivers in both directions to take turns passing through.
George LaPoint, who lives in front of the sinkhole, said he’s concerned about accidents.
“I’m worried traffic’s going to come this way and that way at the same time and somebody’s going to try and avoid getting hit and maybe slide into the sinkhole,” LaPoint said.
A smaller hole is forming near the original one, too. Stevens said her car almost fell into it and her son had to save it.
“[My son] had to move my car gently because it was sinking in,” she said. “It wasn’t a pretty sight, and I just bought that car.”
A city spokesperson acknowledged the issue in a statement:
“The city is aware of the ongoing sinkhole issues on Arlington. We are doing what we can to keep the road safe and operational for now, but we will begin construction this year to replace the waterline underneath the road that is the source of the recurring problems. Following the utility work, we will fully reconstruct Arlington between Detroit and Spencer in 2026.“
Residents WTOL 11 spoke with hope the city expedites repairs.
