TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Some property owners in Lucas County are about to get new tax bills. It comes as we see more issues with property value in Lucas County.
For some the property value is fixed but the property taxes are not.
Wednesday afternoon the I-TEAM learned that some relief and a new deadline are coming for a number of property owners.
Property values have been a big issue in the last few weeks when a programming error was detected and some people had their property values corrected
When the Gross family learned the value of their Oregon home was going up 101% in value since the last valuation three years ago you can imagine the reaction.
“We were shocked when we saw the initial value. We thought it had to be a mistake,” said Michele Gross.
Turns out they ended up on a list of properties affected by a programming error. It’s been corrected and their value is now a more manageable one, a value they agree with. But their tax bill, due at the end of the month, was based on that old amount.
“It’s all on one page there. It should have flowed through and they should have corrected,” said Dan Gross.
“I know there’s a lot more people out there that some of them might not realize they’re paying more taxes than their house is valued at. There’s a lot of us out there,” said Michele Gross.
The I-TEAM has learned the Lucas County Auditor’s office will be recalculating those tax bills and sending new ones. The deadline for the 346 property owners on the programming glitch list will be extended to Feb. 28.
If people have already paid, they will be eligible for a refund. The Gross family will now wait this out, get a new amount and not pay anything they don’t need to.
“I don’t agree to pay the over-inflated because I’m not guaranteed to get that amount back. We’re talking a few thousand dollars,” said Michele Gross.
This pertains to the 346 programming error properties. Auditor Katie Moline says she is still investigating to find more potential issues with values. Residents also still have the opportunity to fight their values through the Board of Revisions. That window to fight it is open right now.
