TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Some local students who believed their college tuition would be paid for are in limbo. They can’t register or get housing.
They’re Scott High School graduates and they were part of a program where a promise was made to pay those bills.
The 13 Action News I-TEAM has also learned there’s another major outstanding bill.
The group promising that money is called Hope Toledo. Their leader said the bills are paid, but some students still cannot get classes.
It was a promise made in early 2020. Scott High School graduates would have their tuition and room and board paid. Even a parent’s tuition too.
The promise was started by Ottawa Hills native Pete Kadens and Hope Toledo would follow through with the work. Now in 2025, there’s an issue for Hope Toledo students at Lourdes University in Sylvania. An email sent to the students said Hope Toledo was three semesters behind in making payments. The school allowed them to register in the last few, thinking the payment would come.
On Monday, those students could not register or move forward with housing.
Hope Toledo told the I-TEAM Monday morning that the bill was paid and the students should be all set. Late Monday afternoon, a Lourdes assistant dean told us she was still not given permission to enroll the student or get them into housing.
Hope Toledo had also branched out into universal Pre-K, that too is seeing money issues. No Pre-K funding will happen for the fall and Hope Toledo is working to get on the November ballot to potentially become levy-funded.
As to why there are issues with the university students, Hope Toledo president/CEO John Jones told the I-TEAM it all stems back to their financial issues that have been documented.
The I-TEAM also learned there is an issue at the University of Toledo. They have 18 Hope Toledo students. A school spokeswoman at UToledo told the I-TEAM the amount owed collectively is more than $150,000. The school said that it is not affecting those students’ ability to register.
