TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – It’s been home to piles of garbage in the front yard and the guy who lives there insists he’s not a squatter, but was given a fake lease.
Since Oct. 1, Toledo police have been to a house on Havre Street 23 times and they were back out there again on Dec. 9.
Toledo police were called to the home to keep the peace as James Miller and his ex girlfriend’s mother had a dispute over items in the home.
The home is the center of a housing court battle because of the mounds of trash on the property.
Miller says he’s not breaking the law. He was scammed.
“We have to move because the lease that we had was fake from from the people that gave us a lease,” said Miller. “They didn’t rightfully own the property and rented it out to us.”
Miller says he’s working to clean-up the trash but has no one to pick it up.
“I recently found out that the landowner had cut off the trash pick up last week right before I had a bulk pick up arranged for the end of the week,” said Miller.
He told 13 Action News how it got like this.
“I would put stuff out to the curb and people would come by dump it out. Disperse everything everywhere,” said Miller.
Last week, the landlord tried dropping off a dumpster, but Miller admits he told them to get off the property.
“The crew that came out, if they would’ve left the bin, I would’ve filled the bin,” said Miller. “The people that came out, they were very rude to me. ‘Oh no, we’re coming in here. We’re leaving today. We’re going to throw everything away,‘” said Miller.
He adds he was trying to save his tools and some scrap items.
“I had some stuff that was scrap that I took in to make some money the other day to pay a bill, stuff like that,” said Miller. “I’m not opposed to getting rid of every thing that needs to go.”
The City of Toledo sent this case to housing court. The owner of the home will face a judge next month to try to resolve the community’s house concerns.
