The department’s full-time crew, along with the staff’s CPR training at Danny’s, helped save the life of a woman who went into cardiac arrest Friday night.
ROSSFORD, Ohio — A woman is alive thanks to the quick actions of staff and patrons at Danny’s Café in Rossford, after she went into cardiac arrest Friday night.
Surveillance video captured the frightening moment when the woman collapsed.
Staff members immediately sprang into action — one began CPR, another retrieved one of the restaurant’s three defibrillators, and a third called 911. Their teamwork kept her alive until emergency responders arrived.
“Time is of the essence for us,” said Rossford Fire Chief Rick Syroka. He credits the life-saving outcome not just to the staff’s heroics, but also to recent CPR training provided by the Rossford Fire Department.
The department’s ability to respond quickly was also key. Rossford only transitioned to a full-time fire department in February. Before that, typically just one or two firefighters were on duty. Now, six firefighters are on shift at a time.
“If you guys were not a full-time fire department, this could have had a much different outcome,” a reporter said to Syroka, who agreed.
Lt. Mike Lord, who has served with the Rossford Fire Department since 2017, said the expanded staffing has made a noticeable difference.
“We have the appropriate staff that’s needed. Here on my shift, we have a paramedic and multiple confident EMTs,” Lord said. “Our response is quicker, and our teamwork is excellent.”
The CPR training at Danny’s Café was the first of its kind offered by the newly expanded Rossford department, but it won’t be the last.
“Danny’s was our first, and there are many more we’d like to continue to do,” Lord said. “We’re looking to expand our outreach in the community with CPR classes.”
Syroka said it’s rewarding to see training directly lead to saving a life.
“It’s nice to see once you put an effort out there on training that people actually use it,” Syroka said.
The woman is reportedly recovering thanks to the life-saving efforts made before paramedics arrived.
