The regional final between Perrysburg and Medina is scheduled to resume at 6 p.m. with the score tied at two in the bottom of the third inning.
CANTON, Ohio — It was a long night for the Perrysburg High School baseball team Thursday, after a delayed start to the regional final was only a sign of things to come in Canton.
The Yellow Jackets were scheduled to start their Division-I regional final matchup against Medina at 5 p.m., but due to weather, the game was pushed back to 8:45 p.m.
After an hour into the game and a 2-2 score in the bottom of the third inning, the game was called and moved to Friday, leaving coaches and parents who made the 160-mile trek to Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium frustrated.
“It’s frustrating when you have the 2.5-hour drive,” Hall said. “We’ll show up and play whenever they tell us, but it’s one of those where it would’ve been easy to just say we’re coming [Friday].”
Another casualty of the false start is that starting pitchers for both teams are now unavailable to play Friday.
“The biggest thing we talked about before was trying not to have this happen,” Perrysburg head coach Dave Hall said. “They didn’t look at Channel 11’s weather radar because it said it was going to rain at 9:30 again and be here till midnight.
“Their idea was it’s a tie game, let’s pick up [Friday]. Hopefully, the weather holds.”
Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium is a turf field, but Hall said that doesn’t mean rain isn’t a factor.
“I’ve coached a lot of years and rain happens. The biggest thing now is we all have turf and everybody thinks you can play through the rain,” Hall said. “You can play through drizzle, you can’t play through hard rain.”
The regional final game is now scheduled to resume Friday at 6 p.m. The winner heads to the D-I state semifinal game against Springboro, which will also be played at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium.
