Pastors call for food pantry donations with SNAP in jeopardy

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – On Sunday and Tuesday evenings outside the Mayores Senior Center, people show up for bags of groceries.

It starts with a hot meal inside the center on Aurora Gonzales Drive. That meal is available seven days a week thanks to volunteers from Vision Ministries and Mosaic Ministries, who split up the duties.

“There’s a real need for help right now,’ said Pastor Earl Harris with Vision Ministries.

He added that food donations at his pantry are dwindling. The same goes for the pantry at United Methodist Church, where Bill Cox gets the groceries to hand out.

“Our food pantry’s looking pretty lean. We’re going to have to put out the word for donations to get people to bring in food to the church so we can build our pantry back up,” said Cox.

With the looming possible loss of SNAP funding this Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025, concern is mounting that there may be a surge in people looking for assistance, but not enough food to go around.

“No reason to be hungry in the Old South End, but there’s a lot of fear. Sunday night, we had about 250 people in this building. It’s graded for 183, and we were just crazed with lots of people. They’re very concerned and very worried,” said Pastor David Kaiser with Mosaic Ministries and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Maumee.

He’s asking everyone to donate to your local food pantry, wherever that may be.

“Everything counts, at this point, because without the help of the people, we’re heading for really bad times,” added Pastor Harris.
