TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Parents are suing Bowling Green City Schools, several staff members and a former coach, claiming the district could have prevented their son’s sexual assault.
13 Action News reported that former Bowling Green coach Zachary Gibson was sentenced to more than 60 years in prison. He was convicted of sex crimes against boys he coached at BGCS.
The lawsuit filed against the school district lists Gibson, the board of education, former superintendent Francis Scruci, an HR professional and the athletic director.
The suit claims the coach had unsupervised time with students, eventually grooming and assaulting their son. The parents said the district did not require background checks for volunteers, which allowed Gibson to slip through the cracks.
A previous I-Team investigation uncovered that the Toledo Diocese told district leaders that Gibson was not cleared to minister with youth. That evidence was used in the lawsuit, saying that this scenario was preventable.
13 Action News has reached out to district leaders. Superintendent Ted Haselman, who was not the superintendent when Gibson was coaching, said the district is working with legal counsel and has no comment at this time.
