TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The Dundee Police Department confirmed multiple incidents involving hazing and assault through an investigation of the Dundee wrestling team. Officials say the incidents took place in the locker room, wrestling room, and on school buses.
An incident also occurred at a state wrestling tournament in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
13 Action News spoke to one of the parents of a Dundee wrestler who believes the whole team shouldn’t be punished for the actions of a few members of the team.
“I would just really urge the public not to condemn the entire team. The vast majority of these kids are very, very good kids,” Mandy Weslow said.
The Dundee school district also launched another investigation, working with a law firm to see if there were any Title IX violations during these incidents. That investigation is still ongoing.
Weslow said the issue of bullying goes beyond just the team, and that concerns over bullying were discussed at the last school board meeting.
“Everyone that talked at the school board meeting on Monday night wasn’t talking about the wrestling team; they were talking about the bullying that is going on at the school,” Weslow said.
Weslow said that her daughter was one of the many students at the meeting to bring up bullying concerns. She believes that if wrestling team members did commit any of these acts that discipline is necessary, just not for the whole team.
“If there were things that were done that were illegal or against other students, they be dealt with both criminally and otherwise. I think all of the moms on the team all the parents on the team, would agree to that. To condemn the entire team is just unfathomable,” Weslow said.
Dundee police have advised anyone with additional information in this matter or anyone with a school safety concern to contact Officer Schiappacasse at jschiappacasse@villageofudnee.net or Officer Gore at jgore@villageofdundee.net
