OSHP reports 23 people killed in crashes over Labor Day weekend

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says it made nearly 400 impaired driving arrests, issued more than 1,800 seat belt citations and responded to 490 crashes statewide.

OHIO, USA — The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported 23 deaths in 20 fatal crashes during the four-day Labor Day weekend.

The reporting period began at midnight Friday, Aug. 29, and ended at 11:59 p.m. Monday, Sept. 1.

According to OSHP, preliminary statistics show at least four of the 20 fatal crashes were related to operating a vehicle impaired. OSHP said troopers made 398 impaired driving arrests and 67 drug-related arrests during the holiday period.

Of the fatalities where a seat belt was available, seven victims were not wearing one, according to OSHP. Troopers issued 1,872 safety belt violations during the four-day reporting period.

“Although Ohio’s safety belt law remains a secondary violation, troopers continue to have zero tolerance during the holiday reporting period when motorists were stopped for a violation and found to not be wearing a safety belt,” OSHP said in a press release Tuesday.

According to OSHP, troopers responded to 490 crashes, issued 1,308 distracted driving citations and helped 1,568 motorists during the four-day period.

OSHP provided stats on incidents by county:
