Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced Friday that Lt. Gov. Jon Husted will fill the Ohio U.S. Senate seat.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has appointed Lt. Gov. Jon Husted to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Vice President-elect J.D. Vance.
Husted is set to become the first U.S. senator from northwest Ohio. He grew up in Montpelier in Williams County.
“I really look forward to working with President Trump and Vice President Vance and the Republican majority who have an America-first agenda to fight inflation, stop illegal immigration, and advance conservative values, and that’s what I’ll do,” Husted said.
Ohio State Rep. Haraz Ghanbari (R) said having Husted filling the senate position is a great benefit. Now, Ohio will have another prominent leader in D.C.
“A great win for the State of Ohio,” Ghanbari said. “A lot of Ohio representation in Washington, both in the United States Senate and at the White House. I think that means great things are ahead for the Buckeye state.”
U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D) said she’s open to working with Husted. She’s also glad to see the seat filled.
“It’ll depend on which committees he’s appointed in the Senate, and obviously we’re all for Ohio, so we’ll welcome him,” Kaptur said.
Husted’s appointment sets the stage for a special election in November 2026 to determine if he will retain the seat.
Republican Attorney General Dave Yost and Former Health Director Amy Acton have officially announced they’re running for Ohio Governor.
Gov. DeWine said he has yet to decide who the replacement for lieutenant governor will be.
