TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A new state law could soon be on the books to require Ohio hospitals to be more transparent with their prices.
A federal law that went into effect more than three years ago requires hospitals to publish their prices. But state lawmakers have said those laws aren’t enforced.
They approved legislation on the final day of their lame-duck session to require Ohio hospitals to make a public list of all standard charges for hospital items or services.
It requires hospitals to have a consumer-friendly list of standard charges for at least 300 of the hospital’s shoppable services.
A hospital transparency bill previously passed the Ohio Senate in June. Lawmakers advanced it to the governor’s desk by attaching it to an unrelated bill, House Bill 173.
It allows hospitals to comply with the law by providing estimates instead of specific cost breakdowns.
The bill heads to the governor for his signature.
