Ohio EPA crews assessing spill on I-475 near Monroe Street that restricted traffic

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Road crews are working to clean a spill on I-475 in Toledo Friday after a crash.

The Ohio Department of Transportation said an unknown substance spilled on the highway just before 1 p.m. Friday, blocking the two right lanes on I-475 West at Monroe Street. It’s unclear at this time whether anyone was injured in the crash.

Road crews initially weren’t sure what the substance was, but said it had a foul smell. A Toledo Fire and Rescue spokesperson later said the driver of the vehicle involved was hauling Scale flake mixed with grease and lube oil.

The driver was hauling the load from West Haven, Michigan to Indianapolis, Indiana. The incident wasn’t classified as a HAZMAT situation.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency is on scene to evaluate the situation.
