WOOD COUNTY, Ohio — Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is suing a Wood County contractor accused of taking large down payments for home-improvement projects, then performing poor work or leaving jobs unfinished.
The lawsuit names Brian Priest, who has operated the unregistered business Priest Roofing, Siding and Remodeling since 2023. According to complaints filed with the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Section, Priest solicited work at customers’ homes, accepted substantial deposits and either did substandard work or failed to complete the projects. Some customers wrote checks to Priest personally instead of the business.
According to Yost’s office, three homeowners reported combined losses of more than $45,000, and two said they had to hire new contractors to finish or repair the work.
“When you put a shingle out and open a business, customers expect honesty,” Yost said. “We are committed to holding this contractor accountable for betraying homeowners’ trust.”
The lawsuit, filed in Wood County Common Pleas Court, alleges multiple violations of Ohio’s Consumer Sales Practices Act. Those include performing incomplete or substandard work, failing to fix defective work, omitting required contract disclosures and engaging in unfair or deceptive business practices. Priest is also accused of failing to include Ohio’s required three-day right-to-cancel language for home-solicitation sales.
Yost is seeking restitution for affected customers, civil penalties and a court order preventing Priest from entering into consumer transactions in Ohio until all financial obligations are met.
Consumers who believe they have been misled by a home-improvement contractor can file a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office online or by calling 800-282-0515.
